Hey just happen to find myself on here after a seven month absence from updates and I wanted to post a quick link to our facebook group. Around the Diocese August 19, 2007

Hey everybody,

Here’s information I received regarding events happening throughout the diocese in September. First off, an evening with the Bishop, how can you miss that? Next up, A retreat is never a bad way to spend a weekend and this event doesn’t look to change that. Finally, if you can’t make it to Sydney next year take part in preparation of local events during 2008’s World Youth Day.

A relaxing dinner and drinks with other young adults from around the diocese, followed by a presentation and interaction with Joliet Bishop J. Peter Sartain.  This is the first of a monthly series of Dinner & Speaker Nights called “YACHT” Nights - “Young Adult Catholics Hanging Together.”  This is also a great chance to reach out to inactive Catholic young adults in their 20s and 30s, as well as those active in their parish communities.

Sacred Fun: Diocesan Young Adult Weekend Retreat

Friday to Sunday, September 21 to 23, 2007 (evening Friday through midday Sunday)

Cenacle Retreat House, Batavia & Butterfield Rds., Warrenville, Illinois 60555
NOTE:  Geared only for those in their 20s and 30s, single, engaged, and married.

This first-ever Diocese of Joliet Young Adult Retreat (which is planned in cooperation with the Archdiocese of Chicago Young Adult Ministry) will focus on finding God in the everyday, especially through film, music, and sports.  The retreat cost is only $160 (double) or $175 (single).

Chicagoland World Youth Day - Initial Planning Meetings

3:00 to 5:00pm. (for youth ministers and parish staff)
6:00 to 8:00pm. (for collegiate and young adult leaders)

To start planning the 2008 Chicagoland World Youth Day Experience (to be held in Romeoville, Illinois in July 2008), please come to one of these meetings (one during the daytime for parish staff members and one in the evening for volunteers, collegiate and young adult leaders).  Bring your ideas and suggestions as we begin planning this diocesan youth, collegiate, and young adult event (PLEASE NOTE: This is the World Youth Day gathering taking place simultaneously with the Sydney event).

Lost in Translation

Hey Gang,

Last night during our bible study we got into a discussion about Jesus descending into the realm of the dead after his crucifixion. Part of that included the topic of how it was described in the bible, in particular there were verses from Peter 1 & 2 that describe that event. Now my favorite resource for biblical reference blueletterbible.org, has a feature that allows you to see a thorough list of the various versions of a particular verse side by side.

So without further delay here’s both of those:

First we look at 1 Peter 3:19, now in this verse all of the available translations use the word “prison” except of course for the Latin version.

When we look at 2 Peter 2:4, we see a few variations in the name used for the place where these fallen angels are sent, switching between Hell and Tartarus. In their confinement different descriptions are used, such as “pits of gloom” and “chains of darkness,” none of it sounds very pleasant.

Here’s a little about the cause taken from their website:

Every year, half a million babies in the U.S. are born prematurely. Premature birth is the leading cause of newborn death and many life long disabilities. The funds we raise in WalkAmerica support research that saves babies’ lives.

Our mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality.
